The Handbuch der wildwachsenden Großstadtpflanzen (Handbook of Plants Growing Wild in the City) is a guide to the flora of the city. Although the city seems at first sight a hostile environment for plants, a surprising variety of species not only manages to survive, but are instead thriving. Cities are even a haven for species that do not grow in the surrounding countryside. All that justifies to describe cities as their own ecosystem for plants.
A large number of the plant species that typically grow in cities are not endemic, meaning that they did not exist in this area before the city was build.
